Stained glass windows are available in one of two basic styles – copperfoil method or leaded method. Both methods have their unique benefits. Leaded windows are best for large, bold windows that need to be able to support a significant amount of weight of glass without bending or breaking.

As already mentioned, leaded stained glass windows have unique properties. Instead of using copper foil to act as the base for the soldering, lead channels are used. The lead “came” forms the basic structure of the window and the pieces of glass fit snugly in the channels formed by the lead. This process is much sturdier than copper foil stained glass windows.
The sturdiness of this method means much larger windows can be created without worrying as much about the overall window bending or breaking. This is the style of stained glass window used exclusively for such large pieces of art as church windows and big door panels.
Fortunately, leaded stained glass is not limited to larger pieces. Many older vintage stained glass pieces were made with the leaded technique. These are routinely available at great prices. As well, unique items such as custom stained glass fireplace screens are usually made in the leaded glass style.
